About the Soque
"Big Fish" Soque River waters are privately managed fisheries
in N. Georgia (near Helen & Batesville, GA) and are known for their Trophy
Trout waters.
These private waters are only available 3 - 4 days each week. The
best fishing begins approximately October 1 as the weather cools and lasts
through June of the following year. In high water years, the
fishing can extend into the summer months as the river remains cold. There
are many fish in the 5 to 8 pound class so the opportunity to land your
share of these trophy size fish is absolutely real. In addition to Rainbows,
anglers may also land a trophy Brown. Most fly anglers are consistently
landing trophy size Rainbows in the 6-7 pound class. There are opportunities
to catch even larger monsters in the 9 to 16 pound class. We do know
that you won't regret fly fishing for these big, healthy fish on the Soque
if you really like to catch big fish!
Most of these waters are fully booked at 4 anglers per day. It's
worth trying this fantastic water whether during the week, or on a weekend.
There are three distinct types of water -- deep pools, gravel bottom pools
with tailouts, and faster pocket water. Your cost is $225 per person
per day, plus guide fees & tips. Booking does require advance
notice for reservations and is highly recommended especially if
you desire to fish on a weekend. Credit cards are not accepted
and a booking deposit is required.
The "season" on the Soque is Fall, Winter, and Spring. This is
the South where hot summer months most often restricts the number of fishable
days on this private water (due to stressing the fish to the point where
they may no longer live). However, the Soque can be fished all Winter
long and has excellent fishing.
Considerations: a Georgia or non-resident fishing license is required,
5 - 8 weight fly rods with floating lines are recommended, catch & release
fly fishing only, tippet size is restricted to 1X or 2X, egg patterns are
forbidden, and barbs must be pinched down. Landing nets are allowed
but wading all the way up through pools disturbing the fish for the next angler
is not allowed. These are the only "rules" for this trophy trout water
on the Soque -- except for having a great day on the river. Be sure to bring
a camera otherwise your friends will not believe you!
Reservations: Request reservations well in advance especially during
"peak" fishing times of the year. A
very nice cabin is available for rent at one of the properties if you
decide to fish the area for either one day, or multiple days. |
